Kidz Eye View of Jamaica
Jamaica, Family-Style
by Rick Pimental-Habib
Jamaica has long been considered the vacation spot of choice for honeymooners, singles, older couples and other adults who want to luxuriate on the warm sands sipping exotic rum drinks, and party till dawn. All that's still available on this sunny Caribbean island The island mantra: No problem, mon.

Most resorts offer the standard features Jamaica is famous for, such as luxurious swimming pools, miles of clean, sandy beaches, and mountainous beauty inland. But many now also offer a wide variety of children's programs, as well as activities for parents and kids to do together. Widely available are sailing and horseback-riding lessons, native arts-and-crafts projects, kiddie pools and inlets, and indoor/outdoor daycare centers to keep the young ones happily occupied for several hours at a stretch. Shopping and art galleries abound in Jamaica, and anything to do with water sports is immensely popular with young and old alike, including sailing, scuba-diving, kayaking, snorkeling, parasailing, inner-tubing, river-rafting and glass-bottom-boat excursions.
Many resorts offer "all-inclusive" packages, which means meals and drinks are included with room rates a plus for families. From abundant breakfast buffets to sumptuous dinners featuring local recipes (curried goat was my favorite!) to rum punch at a myriad of colorful beachside lounges and swim-up bars, all conveniently included in one rate.

View from Wyndham Rose Hall Resort
|
I stayed at the lovely Wyndham Rose Hall Resort outside of Montego Bay, Jamaica's tourism capital. However, I was able to visit several other luxury resorts on the island, namely the Half Moon Golf, Tennis and Beach Club Spa (reputed to be a getaway for the Kennedy's); the Sunset Beach Resort, with its opulent, open-air lobby; the beautiful Jamaica Grande Resort overlooking the port of entry for cruise ships; and two of the FDR Resorts, which offer personal nannies. While these hotels vary in price and available amenities, they all have their own private beaches and offer all-inclusive packages, as well as an array of children's programs. Storytelling around the campfire after dark seemed to be a kiddie favorite at the Wyndam. Hey, sometimes the kids want to get away from Mom and Dad, too, especially when unlimited roasted marshmallows are on the menu.

AquaSol Theme Park offers loads of family fun with water sports in a secluded inlet, lawn tennis, open-air dining, go-carts and a disco, all for a nominal entry fee. At nearby Ocho Rios, famous Dunn's River Falls provides activities for adults and older children. The waterfall cascades over tiers of smooth rock for a challenging climb to the top 600 feet up! The town of Negril is perfect for relaxing, with seven miles of white-sand beach by day (and dancing to reggae music at night). When it's time for parents to sneak away, Port Antonio is a jewel in Jamaica's crown, offering a scenic, rugged coastline with romantic hidden coves and waterfalls.
